Creating a natural dye journal.

Natural dyes can be unpredictable and there are many variables which can impact the outcome of your dyes, so it’s a great idea to get into the habit of recording recipes and processes right from the start of your natural dye journey.

Creating a natural dye journal or sketchbook is a joyful way to release some creative energy too - they are also a constant work in progress, which is a wonderful way to document your growth as you become a more seasoned natural dyer. Enjoy playing with layout, adding illustrations and fancy fonts to make your sketchbook a beautiful creative production!

Recording your recipes, experiments and results not only allows you to reflect upon your beautiful colour creations, but also allows you to learn from mistakes, understand processes and become a much more informed natural dyer. Play with different natural fabrics and fibres; cotton, silk, wool etc. Experiment using different water sources for your dye baths; tap, rain etc. Try out different PH modifiers such as acidic and alkaline. Add some rusty nails to a dye bath and watch the colours change. With so many variables, the possibilities are endless!

Happy journaling!
